Termite-nator by HodariNundu Termite-nator by HodariNundu

An ankylosaur joins a group of alvarezsaurs for a termite feast.
Due to their large hyoid bone, some scientists have suggested that perhaps ankylosaurs (or some of them) had very long tongues and may have fed on insects; their low to the ground bodies and armored eyelids (to prevent bites or stings) would have been useful as well, and even the tail club could be used to destroy termite mounds.
The main problem with this idea is that ankylosaurs seem too big to survive on a diet of tiny insects, but even so, it is possible that they did eat them opportunistically when they had the chance.
And, I've been meaning to draw an insect-eating ankylosaur for ages :>

I like it, when ankylosaurs were armored aardvarks of the Mesozoic!

That is probably one of the coolest, and weirdest, ideas I've EVER seen regarding ankylosaurs. Nevertheless, awesome image, keep up the fantastic work!

I've never heard about this theory! Insectivore Ankys...strange to think about it, but it's an interesting alternative explanation about some aspects you have cited in the description (the armoured eyelids have always intrigued me).
That armoured guy in the drawing has a cool cranial hornamentation!

I agree with ~Phristchampsus, I think it's more like a prehensile tongue, more like a cow.

I personally believe that the large tongue may have been to manipulate food in the way of a long prehensile tongue like a giraffe, also perhaps the tongue was used to moisten food and create a bolus for swallowing.

I agree, though I think it's more like a cow (from observing their feeding behavior for my whole life).

I said maybe for food gathering, because ankylosaur jaws are fairly weak.

And it would make more sense on dinosaurs being able to get enough food in their gullet 'cause I imagine that the plain "dunk your head in" deal wouldn't get them enough food.
