Rhizosmilodon by HodariNundu Rhizosmilodon by HodariNundu

A yawn is all it takes to miss the Megalodon breaching after its prey : >
Rhizosmilodon was a sabertooth whose remains have been found in Florida. It lived five million years ago and is believed to be the ancestor to Smilodon, hence the name (Rhizosmilodon means "root of Smilodon").
With a weight between 50 and 85 kgs, it was the size of a large leopard or cougar, and probably could climb trees to escape unwanted attention from larger predators like the hyena-bear Agriotherium and the much larger sabertooth Machairodus.

Oh, and first Rhizosmilodon in DA :D

Just goes to show you cats were always focused on a nap and food than anything else even a 60 foot shark.

Awesome rendering!:D I have never heard of this creature before.
Do you think Megantereon might be excluded entirely from the ancestry scenerio or this proto type Smilodon might've been a missing link connected Megantereon-Smilodon lineage?

Thanks!! :>

I'm not sure but I think that's the case- Rhizosmilodon being older than both Smilodon and Megantereon (Rhizosmilodon itself was thought to be a species of Megantereon before new remains were found). Because of its age, they're saying that Smilodontini may have originated in North America and only later dispersed into the Old World as Megantereon, and into South America as Smilodon...

Thanks Hodari. Wow I didn't expect to come across smilodon-related genus/species any older than Megantereon, neither did I expect it to be originated in the new world.
I've always felt that there's just too few genus/species known in smilodontini group in comparison with the various scimitar tooths that there seems to be the void when it comes to the connection between primitive Paramahchairodus grades with other members.
Wish more such impressive dirk tooths be discovered in coming years!
