American cheetah by HodariNundu American cheetah by HodariNundu

As requested by :iconasmodeodesinan: A pronghorn has the scare of its life as its worst enemy makes a dash for him.
Miracinonyx is often times called the "American cheetah" but was actually more closely related to the cougar (aka puma, aka mountain lion, aka a hundred other names); its similarity to the cheetah is due to a similar lifestyle, chasing middle-sized prey in open plains.
It is believed that the modern pronghorn (fastest land mammal in the New World) developed its speed because it had to coexist with this predator.

This is convergent evolution in its finest, others say this is the missing link tying cougars and jaguarundis with the cheetahs of Africa as close relatives, scientist really can never agree on anything.

I wonder what pronghorns have to do nowadays, they must be bored witout their own natural predator.

DNA supports the latter.

Oh, coyotes and golden eagles give them a lot to do.

To calves mainly, wolves cant run them down and cougars need to ambush them on surprise to cath them.

I didn´t mention any of those...

Golden eagles apparently hunt adults, coyotes mostly calves but sometimes they're killed in the process.

Eagle cant possibly attack adult pronghorn they are to big,its the coyote hunting in a pack that could threaten an adult.

There's actual evidence of eagles attacking pronghorns and I have books from as early as the 70s stating so.

Now only if the American government allowed a modern African cheetah to be used to hunt pronghorn. Would be great to see the pronghorn's response and film the sequence.

The pronghorn would probably not be too happy...

There's no way in the world that will happen here; pronghorn are endangered in my country.

Rewilding project perhaps?

Bad idea, those "rewilding ideas" to bring animals like lions or cheetahs into the American wilderness would be nothing but introducing invasive species to damage the ecosystem.

Possibly the fastest mammal ever, I've heard, since it was as running-adapted as the African cheetah and a bit larger. Too bad we humans overhunted the horses and camels they preyed upon.

This.

Whoever says megafauna went extinct because of climate change has been living under a rock.

I have a list of species that need to be restored first, and this is in the top class (V. priscus and Smilodon are a few others), with a living relative and some DNA we can accurately reconstruct this thing.

Yay, I know about Miracinonyx since I read an article a few weeks ago about them having influenced pronghorn speed

Fascinating how a puma relative converged so closely with cheetas :O
